Harmony and Samsung Smart TV

Power on your TV, automatically set the correct inputs, and begin navigating your Samsung Smart TV all with a single Harmony remote. You can also create unique Activities that launch directly into your favorite compatible video streaming app (e.g., Netflix).

If you have a Harmony hub‑based product, you can create a "Good Morning" Activity that automatically turns on your coffee maker and Samsung Smart TV, setting it to your favorite news station each morning at designated time.


Setup


Set up your Samsung Smart TV
Set up your Samsung Smart TV and install the apps you'd like to use (e.g., Netflix, Hulu+, Plex).
Connect Harmony to Samsung Smart TV
Once connected, you may use Harmony to control your Samsung Smart TV and trigger Activities in which your Smart TV is included.

Add Samsung TV to your Harmony setup

Please be aware

Only Harmony hub‑based products are able to utilize the Harmony mobile app. If you're not using a hub‑based product, please follow the desktop instructions.

  1. Launch the Harmony mobile app and connect to your Harmony hub.
  2. Select MENU, then Harmony Setup > Add/Edit Devices & Activities > DEVICES.

  1. Select the ADD DEVICE button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select ENTERTAINMENT DEVICE and enter manufacturer Samsung followed by your Smart TV model number.
  3. Once added, Harmony will prompt you to create an Activity. Select Yes.
  4. Continue through the series of questions to build your Watch Smart TV Activity.
  1. Launch the MyHarmony desktop software and sign into your account.
  2. Select your Harmony product from the Remote Gallery screen.
  3. Select the Devices tab on the left side of the screen.

Harmony hub‑based products

  1. Select the Scan for devices button near the center of the page.

  3. You will be prompted to connect your Harmony to your computer with the provided USB cable. Harmony will scan your home Wi‑Fi network for devices. Ensure both your Samsung Smart TV and Harmony Hub are on the same Wi‑Fi network.

Harmony IR based products

  1. Select the Add device button.
  2. Enter the manufacturer Samsung and enter your model number.

Control

Using your Samsung Smart TV

Below are some tips on using Harmony with your Samsung Smart TV. Once you've added your TV to Harmony and setup is complete, we recommend setting up a Smart TV Activity.

  • To access the Samsung Smart Apps, press the SmartHub button on your Harmony's screen, or the Windows key on the Harmony Smart Keyboard.
  • To exit an app, press the Exit button on the Harmony remote or Harmony Smart Keyboard.
  • To return to a previous screen from within an app, long press the Channel Previous button on the Harmony remote, or press the Back key on the Harmony Smart Keyboard.

    Harmony 600/650/700 remotes may have the previous command assigned to their screen. Learn how.
  • The menu key does not work from either the Samsung remote, nor a Harmony remote when you are inside an app.
  • For auto power and/or auto input issues, disable CEC auto power and input switching.

Harmony hub‑based products

Harmony hub‑based products can control select Samsung Smart TVs, and also add additional capabilities. Using the Harmony mobile app:

  • Control icon lists commonly used Samsung Smart TV buttons.
  • Gestures allows you to control your Activity using simple swipe gestures over your phone screen. For example, swiping up/down will change your volume.
  • Favorites will display all your Samsung Smart TV channels for easy switching.
  • Voiceand Text entry allows you to control your Samsung Smart TV using your mobile device's keyboard and/or microphone.

Harmony IR based products

All Harmony remotes may navigate and control control select Samsung Smart TVs.


Samsung Smart TV app navigation

The following apps can controlled using your Harmony Remote.

Netflix

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Netflix app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, FastForward and Rewind commands work. Netflix allows you to move a frame forward or backward using the direction left and right arrows.

Text entry is possible using the Harmony app.

Hulu

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Hulu app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, FastForward and Rewind commands work.

The Hulu app has an on screen keyboard you navigate using direction keys and does not accept keyboard text entry.

YouTube

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the YouTube app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, FastForward and Rewind commands work. YouTube allows you to navigate between videos using the Skip Forward and Skip Backwards commands.

The YouTube app has an on screen keyboard you navigate using direction keys and does not accept keyboard text entry.

Amazon

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Amazon app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, FastForward and Rewind commands work. Amazon allows you to move a frame forward or backward using the direction left and right arrows.

Text entry is possible using the Harmony app.

Plex

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Plex app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, FastForward and Rewind commands work. Plex allows you to move a frame forward or backward using the direction left and right arrows.

Text entry is possible using the Harmony app.

Browser

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Browser app.

Media Keys are not used within the Browser app.

Text entry is possible using Harmony Smart Keyboard or Harmony app.

Mouse/Cursor control is possible using Harmony Smart Keyboard.

Other apps

The behavior of other apps may vary depending on its design.

Some apps may require the use of the original Samsung Smart TV remote. These are typically apps that make use of motion control.

Customize


Adjust the physical buttons on your remote

Harmony has already optimized the buttons on your remote; however you can further customize these buttons depending on your preference.

Add, remove or rename commands on your remotes screen

Harmony automatically imports your Samsung Smart TV channels and displays them under the favorites section on your Harmony remote. Commands specific to your Watch Smart TV Activity are also displayed for which you can add, remove or rename them.

Customize Harmony mobile app buttons

You can view common Samsung Smart TV commands on your phone or tablet screen. You can add, remove or rearrange these commands.

Set your own swipe gestures

By default, swiping up or down on the gestures screen will change volume. There are 22 gestures in total, view and customize them from the app.

How Harmony integrates with Samsung Smart TVs

All Harmony hub‑based remotes

Harmony connects to and controls your Samsung Smart TV using IR (infrared) signals. Some Smart TV models may offer text entry via Bluetooth when using a Harmony hub‑based product. In this case, your mobile device must be connected to the same Wi‑Fi network as your Harmony hub.

Harmony remotes without Harmony Hub

Samsung Smart TVs are compatible with all IR (infrared) based products.
