Setup

Set up Chromecast
Set up and configure Chromecast using the Google Cast app on your iOS or Android device, make sure it's connected to the same Wi‑Fi network as your Harmony hub.

Connect Harmony and Chromecast
Once connected, you'll be able to create Activities that include your Chromecast. Start your Activity, which prepares your devices, then start casting from your PC or mobile device.

Add Chromecast to your Harmony setup

  1. Launch the Harmony app and connect to your Harmony hub.
  2. Select MENU, then Harmony Setup > Add/Edit Devices & Activities > DEVICES.
  3. Select ADD DEVICE at the bottom, followed by SCAN FOR WI‑FI DEVICES.
  4. Harmony will search for any connected Chromecast devices on your home Wi‑Fi network.
  5. Select the next to Google Chromecast, followed by NEXT.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your custom Activity.
  1. Launch the MyHarmony desktop software and sign into your account.
  2. Select your Harmony product from the Remote Gallery screen.
  3. Select the Devices tab on the left side of the screen.

  3. You will be prompted to connect your Harmony to your computer with the provided USB cable. Harmony will scan your home Wi‑Fi network for Chromecast. Ensure both Chromecast and your Harmony hub are on the same Wi‑Fi network.
  1. Select the Add device button.
  2. Enter the manufacturer Google and enter model Chromecast.

Control

Harmony cannot directly control Chromecast, so casting will need to be initiated separately from your Activity. When casting from a mobile device, you'll need to use that device to control media.

When casting from PC, you're able to control media by setting up your computer as the media control device when creating your Activity. In this scenario, Harmony offers the following control options while casting from PC:

Netflix

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Netflix app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, Fast-Forward and Rewind commands work. Netflix allows you to move a frame forward or backward using the direction left and right arrows.

Text entry is possible using the Harmony app.

Hulu

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Hulu app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, Fast-Forward and Rewind commands work.

The Hulu app has an on screen keyboard you navigate using direction keys and does not accept keyboard text entry.

YouTube

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the YouTube app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, Fast-Forward and Rewind commands work. YouTube allows you to navigate between videos using the Skip Forward and Skip Backwards commands.

The YouTube app has an on screen keyboard you navigate using direction keys and does not accept keyboard text entry.

Plex

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Plex app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, Fast-Forward and Rewind commands work. Plex allows you to move a frame forward or backward using the direction left and right arrows.

Text entry is possible using the Harmony app.

FAQs

Is there a way for me to initiate casting with Harmony?

You may add Chromecast as a Harmony device; however, you may not navigate or control content through Chromecast directly. You may however, add your computer and use it as a control device for your Activity. For more information on how to add your computer, please refer to one of the following articles:


Setup

Adding Chromecast to your Harmony setup

  1. Launch the Harmony Express app and tap Edit Setup.
  2. Next, tap + to perform a Wi‑Fi scan, and select Chromecast.
    • If Chromecast isn't found, ensure it's on the same Wi-Fi network as Harmony Express.
    • If you still have issues, reboot Chromecast and router then try again.
  3. Tap Continue and follow the on-screen prompts.

Control

Notice

Chromecast may be added to your Harmony Express configuration, setting your sound and video input options, but you are unable to initiate casting using your Harmony remote.

Voice

You can use your voice to send commands such as turn on, turn off, and more. Tap What to say in the Harmony Express app to see sample commands for Chromecast. Initiating casting using your voice is not supported.

Hub‑based remotes

You can include Chromecast in your Harmony Activities, setting your sound and video input options, but you are unable to initiate casting using your Harmony remote.

Harmony Express remotes

You can include Chromecast in your Harmony Express configuration, setting your sound and video input options, but you are unable to initiate casting using your Harmony remote.
